    The Institute of Legal Studies was founded on March 1, 1983 through the integration of the Juvenile Delinquency Research Institute, which was established in 1975 as a part of Kangwon National University and the Legal Aid Center affiliated with a college of Law in 1979. Since its foundation in 1983, The Institute of Legal Studies is designed to enhance the enormous capacity for research and to improve legal education and culture in today's global era with the goal of the progress of legal scholarship and contribution to the development of the society in connection with the law. To achieve this, The Institute is carrying out things such as research on various and significant legal issues and holding a seminar, conference and publication of academic journal. The Kangwon Law Review which is recognized as a valuable law journal from the National Research Foundation of Korea has been published three times a year and The Environmental Law and Policy that is professional environmental law journal published semiyearly.

  • Humanities Institute of Kangwon National University

    Humanities Institute of Kangwon National University was established in 1988 to contribute the development of Humanities and Kangwon Studies by researching systematically various mental activities of man's mind that are exposed in literature, language, history, philosophy, and art. It has developed a large number of research projects and social services, published many books and journals, and held many local and international conferences. Now, it becomes the center of research in the grand project of Humanities Korea, and supports more than 25 researchers, including 14 full-time members.

    The Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) is a collaborative research institution located on the campus of the Kangwon National University in Chunchon, Republic of Korea. Currently, it encompasses 29 faculty-led teams from 9 departments of College of Natural Sciences, Medicine, Pharmacy, Biomedical Sciences, and Engineering within the KNU. The research areas include Biochemistry, Molecular Cell Biology, Medical Sciences, and Environmental Biology. The mission of ILS is to support research activities of its members, next-generation scientists, and bio-medical companies in the Kangwon Province Region. The Institute seeks to establish partnerships with any individuals or organizations to develop biological sciences and technologies in the Kangwon Province Area.

  • Agriculture and Life Sciences Research Institute

    Established in 1958, the Agricultural and Life Sciences Research Institute (ALSRI) has been one of outstanding institutes in the field of life sciences, at Kangwon National University. ALSRI has a mission to carry out researches regarding the field of agricultural and life sciences, to develop biotechnological techniques, and to propagate all of our achievements to researchers and farmers. We are hoping that ALSRI will be developed as a leader institute in the field of applied life sciences as well as agriculture, in Korea.

  • Institute of Industrial Technology

    The institute of industrial technology is a research institute in the college of engineering. It consists of 5 major divisions which are architectural, electrical & computational, mechanical & mechatronics, environmental and energy, civilㆍmaterialㆍindustrialㆍchemical division.
    The institute publishes a research journal twice per year, supports domestic and international workshops in the major fields of engineering, and helps to organize research centers which focus to study new research trends in engineering. Now, we have 12 research centers which are renewable energy research center, nano-particle manufacturing research center, medical imaging research center, and other 8 centers. The other activities of the institute are re-education of the field engineers, exchanges of research results and information with other institutions.
  • Institute of Forest Science

    The Institute of Forest Science was established in 1975 to conduct advanced researches in fields of forestry and natural environments. The institute consists of 6 research divisions, including Forest Resources, Forest Environment Protection, Forest Management, Landscape Architecture, Forest Biomaterials Engineering, and Paper Science & Engineering. In addition, 2 research centers of Tree Diagnostic Center and Forest Ginseng R&D Center belong to the institute. The institute has academic staffs of around 38, and has conducted various research projects of eligible conservation and utilization of forest and environmental resources for over 35 years. The institute holds domestic or international symposiums and seminars and forest schools every year. The institute publishes quaterly Journal of Forest Science which contains highly qualified papers of forestry-related topics.

RIER performs various researches on the exploration, development and utilization of energy and mineral resources.     Institute of Animal Resources at Kangwon National University was established in the year 1988 to activate the scientific research related to animal science and to increase its efficiency. The institute continuously pursues to support the development of animal industry through basic and applied researches, to facilitate the creative experiment and practice for students to train them as technical experts, to make a contribution to the development of the community by strengthening the educational-industrial complex. The other goal of the institute is to conduct researches on the animal resources in North Korea thereby preparing for unification, and to introduce the advanced research skills, hosting a domestic and international scientific exchange and seminars.

  • Changgang Institute of Paper Science & Technology

    The Changgang Institute of Paper Science & Technology had its beginning in June 1992 in response to the pulp and paper industry's critical need for scientists and engineers when the building was donated by the Changgang Foundation of the Shinpoong Paper Company. The institute is a unique organization in leading the high quality education, research, and service in Korea.
    The institute has three divisions, which are Administration, Research and Development, and Information Service. It has also management advisors consisting of the representatives of the related associations and technical advisors from the national and international principal scientists and engineers. Currently 35 research staffs from university and industry research institutes are cooperating with industry to conduct research in several areas of immediate industry interest. Among there are researches in nonchlorine bleaching, pigments development, ultrasonic deinking of non-impact printed waste paper, alkaline sizing, special functional papers, packaging, environmental impact, paper properties, printing, water retention, and cellulose chemical modification.
    The main purpose is to carry out the fundamental and applied research and to develop the workshop programs for engineers working in the pulp and paper mills in order to contribute to the development of pulp and paper industry in Korea. The important roles and activities of the institute are fulfilled through various activities as follows:

    Cave Research Institute of Korea is involved in cave exploration, scientific investigation of wild & tourist caves, and management of showcaves.

  • Institute for Advanced Construction Materials

    The institute of Advanced Construction Materials (IACM) was established as a Regional Research Institute by approval of the Korea Ministry of Science and Technologies in 1995. There are12 faculty members and 3 staffs conducting research as co-workers in Engineering and Design specialties.
    The primary purpose of IACM is to support regional industry research works upon their requests using advanced research equipments and facilities. The research and development areas include concrete polymer composites, advanced asphalt pavements, latex modified concretes, plastic and rubber composites, advanced usage of stone and aggregates.

    Vascular System Research Center (VSRC) is an institute that fulfills the following purposes by studying physiologic and pathologic functions of the blood vessels that provide nutrients and oxygen to peripheral tissues and remove metabolic wastes.

    The cyclotron research institute in Kangwon national university has a cyclotron facility and radiochemistry equipments, and this institute has three goals.

    • 1. Perform the high technology experiments of basic research and application using high energy charged particle beam for researcher in Kangwon region.
    • 2. Cultivate the manpower in the cyclotron, nuclear, radiation fields for undergraduate and graduate students in Kangwon region
    • 3. Produce the radiopharmaceuticals labelled with a shot-life radioisotope which is used in Positron Emission Tomography (PET).

  • Medical & Bio-Material Research Center

    The Medical & Bio-Materials Research Center (MBMRC) has been organized in the Kangwon National University for doing the national research projects to develop the new biomedical materials and medical devices. MBMRC will be funded by Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, from 2009 to 2018. The annual budget of MBMRC is approximately US $ 27,500,000.00. The MBMRC project will focus on establishing core technology for developing new biomedical materials for disease diagnosis and cure, drug delivery, health improvement, and medical devices. Ultimately the project will construct the biomedical fusion cluster of Gangwon province and make education system for competent biomedical scientists of the next generation in order to activate the future regional industry in Gangwon province.

    Kangwon Medical Convergence Center was selected for a project by 5+2 Human Resource Training for Leading Companies in the Regional Economy Program promoted by the government. This is the leading industry of the Kangwon economic region to institute the medical convergence industry of Korea. The medical convergence industry of Korea is expected to grow based on the Kangwon Medical Convergence Center at Kangwon University.
